Welcoming Future Scientists 2017 (UPRP)

The University of Puerto Rico at Ponce (UPRP or UPR-Ponce) is a state university located in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. UPRP is the only campus of the University of Puerto Rico System in the southern region of the island.

The University of Puerto Rico in Ponce RISE Program (UPR-PRISE) hosts a congress for academically accomplished students enrolled in tenth (10th) or eleventh (11th) grade with a genuine interest in Natural Sciences:“Welcoming: Future Scientists”. This activity is held at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce on late March, every year.

The  objectives of the congress are:

  • Advise high school students about the opportunities that the Natural Sciences  disciplines offer;
  • Introduce them to research techniques in a laboratory environment;
  • Encourage them to consider pursuing graduate studies in disciplines within Natural Sciences.

The activities will include: careers-oriented seminars, vendors exhibitions and hands-on workshops in molecular biology, microscopy, chemistry, physics, and environmental sciences, among others. In addition, the participants will have the opportunity to interact with successful college students, obtain advice from them, win Prizes, and receive a Certificate of  Participation.

In this congress I was part of the workshop in bioengineering and smart materials.  In this workshop we covered prosthetics, orthosis, medical robots, ferrofluidics in medicine, liquid crystals in medicine and nanotecnology in medicine.
